GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF WEEKENDS AND LONGER SESSIONS :

In all cultures and in all ages, the human voice has been honored as the most precious of all musical instruments. And it has always been sustained by rhythm.
Different cultures have developed highly specific vocal and rhythmic arts. These are very instructive. At their best, they are all "sacred," whether linked to a religious tradition or not, inasmuch as they raise practitioners' consciousness of their deeper nature.
Practices which make use of voice and rhythms together, especially with movement, have always been a powerful means of raising and deepening consciousness beyond the habitual. They allow us to play, to dance, to commune with each other, to purify and renew ourselves, and to heal.
In our civilization, we have mostly lost this art. We rarely sing together, we listen and move to recorded music, and have lost a true sense of our natural rhythm.
This workshop is a new and intensive approach to rediscovering the authentic, natural roots of music in our own bodies and souls. It makes use of new and original techniques, as well as many taken from other cultures, involving singing, rhythmic movements, vocalizations, and percussion.
A partial summary of content:
- learning to hear the voice resonate in one's body, and sharing this with others
- dissolving the fear of improvisation
- meditation and silence: the sacred origins of music, beyond all words and doctrines
- chanting harmonic overtones
- discovering Sufi-inspired rhythmic exercises
- introduction to Gregorian chant
- learning traditional rhythms of other cultures
- introduction to traditional percussion: the frame drum
- exploring the immensity and power of vocal "noises"
- allowing the body to express itself in rhythmic movement
- learning about certain new and old vocal traditions
- feeling the roles of different parts of the body in movement
- relaxed concentration, inner and outer attention, breathing, collective improvisation
- theatrical and poetic exercises
This approach requires no previous musical training, and appeals to both beginners and experienced musicians.
